Sakarya Climate Change Impact and Vulnerability Assessment Consultative Meeting

In line with the studies carried out to prepare a climate change adaptation strategy and action plan for Sakarya, the consultative meeting on the impact and vulnerability assessment was held online from December 28 to 29, 2020.

The consultative meeting was held with the participation of 68 representatives from public institutions, the private sector, academia, and non-governmental organizations.  The meeting was conducted as starting with the opening remarks by Çiğdem Tuğaç, Head of Local Climate Change Policies Division of Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Climate Change and Adaptation Department, and Sungur Mehmet Yeni, Head of Environmental Protection and Control Department of Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality.

Following the opening speeches, Project Manager Diren Ertekin introduced the project components and project activities for pilot cities.

While the presentations on the effects of climate change, sectoral vulnerability, and data needs and availability were given on the first day the subjects on an analysis of the impact and vulnerability of Sakarya the high-vulnerability sectors, the most affected groups, adaptive capacity, and adaptation needs were covered on the second. The participants expressed their opinions and provide contributions through online applications that allow interactive participation.

Participants listed the climate change risks that their cities are most vulnerable: Drought, excessive precipitation, and heatwaves topped the list. Regarding which sector is the most affected by climate change, participants listed agriculture and livestock, water resources, and ecosystem-biodiversity.
